If you are interested in volunteering here for a few weeks in 2018, this is what you need to know before getting in touch.
What we ask of volunteers:
We need volunteers to help us with the garden. You need to be happy working in the garden unsupervised, doing a variety of jobs such as weeding, mulching, digging, planting out, pruning etc. Occasionally we might need help with maintenance work, so some ‘handy-man’ skills would be useful too. We expect around 4-5 hours a day of work, depending on what’s going on.
If you are here during retreats, you are welcome to participate and we would like you to help out with kitchen and cleaning duties during that time. With this in mind, our preference is for volunteers who have some interest in the work we do here (which you can find out about by browsing this site), but no experience in these subjects is necessary.
You must love Nature and enjoy being in the peace of the countryside, away from civilization. We are not in walking distance of any town or village and there is no public transport. We go into town for shopping, once or twice a week, which is about 20 minutes drive, but apart from that, we don’t go anywhere! Experience has shown us that couples are much happier in this environment than single people. We have dogs, cats and chickens, so you need to enjoy being around other animals – because they will all want to get to know you!
You need to speak reasonable English, or Spanish with some English (so we can improve our Spanish). You need to be able to stay for a minimum of three weeks, between the beginning of May and the end of September.
What we offer volunteers:
We are in a very beautiful and peaceful location, with no neighbours. Accommodation is in a sweet self-contained and comfortable cabin about 50M from our house.
We eat a main meal together at our house most days and we provide food for breakfast and snacks, coffee and tea etc for you to self-cater the rest of the time. We are omnivores and I am an excellent cook. We’re happy to share beer and wine with you, but we don’t accept recreational drug use on our property.
We have satellite internet at the house, which you can use with your own devices. We will pick you up at our local station when you arrive and drop you off there when you leave.
The Greenwood Standard:
This summer, we had a wonderful young couple volunteer here. They did an amazing job on the garden and we enjoyed their company very much. They have helped us set up the Greenwood Standard, which is a kind of checklist of our ideal volunteers.
- You love Nature
- You are optimistic, flexible and enjoy life
- You are a good listener and able to communicate openly and honestly
- You love to learn
- You have useful, practical skills
- You are in good health, mentally and physically
- You DO NOT follow any formal religion
- You are interested in the topics covered in this blog
- Ideally, you have previous volunteering experience
Have a look around this site and if you think this might be what you are looking for, get in touch; tell us a bit about yourself/selves, what you’ve done that’s relevant, why you want to come and when.
